2024 Season: Game 62 Recap – Sunday, June 9

It’s another tough season for New York Mets fans so far, which makes it so surprising how well the triple-A Syracuse Mets are doing in the International League. Among the 20 International League teams at the doorstep of the American and National Leagues, they are the second-best team with a 38-24 record. They trail only Omaha of the West Division and lead by a half-game over Scranton in the East Division (which is important to the first-half playoffs picture in AAA ball.

Syracuse 7, Saints 4 — Sunday, June 9

The Syracuse Mets came to town and took 4-of-6 from the Saints (27-35) this week, finishing off their trip with a 7-4 victory in which the St. Paul nine made 3 defensive errors and stranded 13 baserunners while occupying the batter’s box.

An error in the 4th led to the losing margin for the Saints. With 1 out, first baseman Severino misplayed a grounder which would have been the second out. The next batter up, Sanchez, launched a 3-run homer to right-center field to put the Mets ahead 5-3.

Earlier in the game, Severino hit a solo home run for his 10th 4-bagger of the season. In the next inning, Helman smashed a 2-run blast to again tie Severino at 10. They trail Wallner, who has 11 home runs in fewer games since being sent down by the Twins.

Syracuse 8, Saints 3 — Saturday, June 8

Syracuse beat the Saints 8-3 Friday night by tagging starting pitcher Dobnak for 5 runs in the 4th inning. Trayce Thompson, the son of Minnesota Gophers basketball legend Mychal Thompson, blasted a 3-run shot to make it 5-0. Dobnak then yielded 3 straight singles before getting a strikeout for the first out. Wittgren relieved him and struck out the next 2 batters.

All 3 Saints runs came on solo homers by Helman, Castillo and Holland.

The Saints hit the road and open a 6-game series Tuesday at 5:35 p.m. against the Louisville Bats at Louisville Slugger Field. They also play Wednesday at 11:05 am, Thursday at 5:35 pm, Friday at 6:15, Saturday at 6:15, and Sunday at 12:05 pm. All road games are broadcast on 96.7 FM.
